Mr. Deity and the Promised Land

Saturday was a complete blur. Friday night I watched Gamer [it was okay... but silly me took the Dramamine for a game I didn't play and I swallowed it when it was actually chewable] towards the end of the action packed movie I fell asleep and additionally missed Conan’s last show. I think I mainly played games with Jonathon on Saturday and did a ton of washing clothes– OH! I took apart one of J’s old wheelchairs and refurbished it. I was sick of waiting for help and red tape when he so desperately needs a way to get around. His seating still isn’t ideal, but it’s better than nothing and better than what he had. I managed to slice my thumb under the skin giving myself a wonderful blood blister that I stupidly released right before working on rusted parts and I’m combating a slight infection that I’m keeping on top of. I guess I was busy Saturday.

Today I bought Ash some groceries to help her with her ailment and then took her and Isla out to lunch with Jonathon and I, picked up some video games at Gamestop [awesome used game sales on top of my discount I get with my nifty frequent gamer card], more clothes washing and that’s about it. Little time for much else.

THAT is why I didn’t update. I didn’t know what to update. Reading the Haiti death toll is about 150,000 -200,000 [depending on your news source]. It made me just feel all that closer to my kids, being thankful for the life I’m providing my son, that I can help my daughter a little– and being thankful what I’ve been able to provide for us and having them both be such strong, kind hearted, intellectual individuals.

So now that my evening has wound down and I chewed my Dramamine this time [I want the same cozy sleep I had last night!]– I’ve nothing much to add this evening, except to share the latest Mr. Deity.

Barbie’s Looking For New Job

The recession has hit us all and Barbie is no exception. I guess looks aren’t enough these days so Mattel is giving the blond bombshell a helping hand by delivering a current list of job openings: Environmentalist, Computer Engineer, Surgeon, Architect and News Anchor. [sigh] I guess little girls aren’t going to be heading out to buy ‘Real World Without a Higher Education Barbie’ like: Call Center Barbie, Starbucks Barbie, and the ever unpopular “Do you want fries with that?” Barbie. It’s a tough market out there, I’m sure a lot people out there with degrees higher than an Associates are scooping fries into bags in order to make ends meet these days.

Movie Barbie up on the ladder is supposed to inspire young girls to strive for better than their brain surgeon turned call center help desk parent.

Liv Dolls

A few years ago I wrote a long– SUPER long article about the direction of Barbie (who was massively tramping it up at the time), the influence it had of young girls and the ho nation that lay ahead of us. This past year, while not being completely thrilled with Mattel– I saw a new generation of ‘fashion’ dolls out there that wore less make, more clothes and actually sold them with doll computers, sporting equipment and focused on friendship and self improvement. It was a nice change! The party girl/Paris Hilton looking dolls began to leave the shelves to make room for Moxy and Liv Dolls

Moxy Doll

Anyway– here’s your chance to get Barbie working again and since she doesn’t seem to be going any where soon… let’s at least give her a new occupation that’s NOT News Anchor. You can go here to cast your vote, I did!

Life Unexpected Part 1.5

I know that I wrote earlier I was going to review this tonight, however, I am watching this show in two parts– Big Bang Theory trumped the second half. I’m a creature of habit.

The television show thus so far about a young girls whose parents had a high school fling, the father thought the mom had an abortion and all truths come out when the daughter finds her biological parents prior to her 16th birthday so that she can emancipate herself out of the foster care system hell she’s lived in her entire life.

Very likable, not over the top and I can’t wait to finish it. In the meantime, here’s a clip from Youtube that they were watching which caused me to of course look up and post [maybe not the *exact* same one].

Very Mary Kate

I just followed the link to it and watched it literally 10 seconds ago (not counting the time to hit my site and write this).

So far there are 3 minute long episodes which if it means you don’t like it, it’s no big deal. If you *do* enjoy it– you’ve got just as short of an attention span as I do.

I <3 cute ideas.

Episode 2: Moving Day

Movies that I’m going to briefly review

Okay, maybe it’s only one movie that I’m going to review– The Hurt Locker.

I saw it in the On Demand menu for a couple of weeks now and I kept passing it by because it didn’t look interesting. “Another war story”. I got it, war is harsh, cruel and it sucks to be over there. I thank the people who go into the service to fight whatever war our country thrusts them into, but after watching just about every war movie known to wo/man… what other imagery needs to be embedded in my head? I just got over all the Nam flashbacks and I wasn’t even there. I’ve had quite a few friends cycle in and out of this hellish war, some wounded and thankfully no casualties, and I had even talked to them on webcams which was a little unnerving. I couldn’t imagine being there first hand.

This film piqued my interest during the Golden Globe Awards show when James Cameron was unprepared for his speech for ‘Best Director of a Motion Picture’ because he thought that Kathryn Bigelow was going to walk home with the award. Yes, I’m easy like that.

The movie itself didn’t deliver what I had expected. It wasn’t really heart tugging, and it didn’t give me the grit, grime and like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, and Saving Private Ryan.

The movie was ‘good’, but it didn’t fully tell the story and convey the horror of being on violent foreign soil disarming bombs like I thought it should. It seemed to try really hard though!

The Hurt Locker is based on accounts of Mark Boal, a freelance journalist who was embedded with an American bomb squad in the war in Iraq. Director Kathryn Bigelow was familiar with Boal’s work before his experiences, having turned one of his Playboy articles into the short-lived television series The Inside. When Boal was embedded with the squad, he went with the members 10 to 15 times a day to watch their tasks, keeping in touch with Bigelow about his experiences. Boal combined his experiences into a fictional retelling of real events. He said of the film’s goal, “The idea is that it’s the first movie about the Iraq War that purports to show the experience of the soldiers. We wanted to show the kinds of things that soldiers go through that you can’t see on CNN, and I don’t mean that in a censorship-conspiracy way. I just mean the news doesn’t actually put photographers in with units that are this elite.”

If it had a different director, if it turned it up a notch, if it tried a slightly different approach with film, lightening, sound, music, etc– it could have been epic. I understand it got a lot of awards, I get that, it was good. It’s the type of film where you need to do the research on the making of it to appreciate “why” it’s good.  If I had to rate it 1-5 stars, I’d give it a 3.5, maybe 4.

While I really liked the characters, the movie should have been more tense– especially for a film where they’re disarming bombs on the side of roads. Perhaps it was intense and my life has just turned my nerves to steel, I don’t know.

It’s definitely a movie worth viewing.

I’m looking forward to ‘The Invention of Lying” which comes out tomorrow. I know it’s probably a C+ movie and I may give it three stars– but the idea gets an A.

“Life Unexpected”

This is a show that I may possibly watch due to two factors:
1. I find the plot interesting. ‘Nuff said

After spending all of her 15 years bouncing from one foster family to another in Portland, Oregon, Lux (Brittany Robertson) has decided it’s time to take control of her life and become an emancipated minor. Her journey through the legal maze leads Lux to her biological father, 30-something Nate “Baze” Bazile (Kristoffer Polaha), who owns a bar, lives like an aging frat-boy with two slacker roommates, and is astonished to learn that he has a teenage daughter. Lux is equally astonished when Baze reveals that her mother is Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby), a star on the local “Morning Madness” radio show, along with her on-air partner and real-life boyfriend, Ryan Thomas (Kerr Smith). Lux has been listening to Cate’s voice on the radio as long as she can remember, so she feels an instant connection with the mom she’s never met. Baze takes Lux to meet Cate, who is shocked and saddened to learn that Lux has grown up in foster care, but thrilled to finally meet her beautiful daughter. When a judge decides that Lux isn’t ready for emancipation and unexpectedly grants temporary joint custody to Baze and Cate, they agree to try to get past the awkwardness and make a belated attempt to give Lux the family she deserves. -Wikipedia

2. It takes place in my old stomping grounds in Portland, Oregon.

I haven’t really seen any films or show filmed locally that I liked and I’m curious if this will be the exception or is the city doomed to mundane performances or can it be a break through from the overcast?

It boasts that it will be combination of Juno and Gilmore Girls, which is all fine and dandy– however, both those vehicles tried a little to hard with ‘clever writing’ and the dialog in both became a little annoying.

The show airs on the CW beginning January 18th, which also *should* cause some pause due to the network. It’s not really a network known for smart shows or shows that cater audiences who aren’t prone to taping pictures of the cast in their school lockers.

If anything, for the one hour of attention I’ll probably give it– I can point and say in delight, “I’ve been there! I know that place! Hey… that’s so and so!” Then again, it’s probably filmed in BC and the only ‘local shots’ will be stock footage.

Again, it does sound interesting and the cast is likable enough. Who knows, it could be my next television show addiction.

New Mr. Deity Episode

So I only had one correspondence with the man (because I suck at writing back) He’s awesome as all hell, witty, talented and I strongly suggest subscribing on YouTube and becoming a fan. Maybe one of these days I’ll see if I can persuade the almighty creator for an interview to get answers for life’s more perplexing questions like; why my hair is perfection when I get ready in the morning and then as soon as I grab my keys it freaks out and winds up in a ponytail.–

Here’s the latest episode– I’ll be adding it to the humor section after it’s spent some time down here in the main area of the site.

Star Wars Burlesque Show

Down in LA there has been a new burlesque show that have people buzzing even in a galaxy far far away. Designed by Carlos Flores, George Lucas character creations get a new boost… or should I say, “bustier”.

For you SoCal droids, if you missed the show then there’s still a chance to see it, Devil’s Playground will repeat the show on March 13.

From LA Weekly:

“Saturday night, downtown club Bordello temporarily transformed itself into Mos Eisley Cantina for a night of Tatooine-styled shenanigans helmed by Devil’s Playground. Star Wars Burlesque reimagined a host of beloved characters from the film series — from the sexy to the androgynous to the grotesque — as scantily clad female performers, with locals On Blast assuming the role of cantina band.

Have you ever wondered what might happen if Jabba the Hutt accidentally swallowed one of his slave girls whole? At Star Wars Burlesque, a balloon-clad vixen bursts through the body of a worm the size of a small planet, engages in some light spanking and then chains herself to a wall.

There’s a reason why Courtney Cruz always performs last at Devil’s Playground events and it’s not simply because she founded the burlesque troupe. Her costumes, designed by Carlos Flores, are consistently over-the-top and heavily detailed, in this instance, down to the Stormtrooper pasties. She performed to Front 242′s industrial dance hit “Headhunter.”"

Yes it’s a little cheesy and fun, and although it’s not ‘my thing’, I think if I were a little more comfortable with myself you’d probably find me begging to perform as a female version of Han Solo. What can I say– I love the vest.
