I stood there on that deserted highway as twilight's sky began to sneak over the sweltering horizon.
Turning my head up towards the heavens, I cried for a sign, yet the echoes of my voice deafened me.
Exhausted from the long trek, my knees buckled me to the searing pavement.  I felt my skin burn and blister beneath my burdened body.
A taunting wind stirred the earth into my face, clinging as if it were familiar.
Through wincing eyes I searched the surroundings, fixating on my stretching shadow.
I traced the outline of my torso and saw my resurrection as if all of a sudden someone turned my head forcing me to look.
For the first time the approaching darkness looked luminous as I reached out to embrace it.
It made love to me over and over again until I found myself.
A new strength emerged as I began to finally stand, trying desperately to conceal my scream until it relentlessly broke through causing me to listen with virgin ears.
As I gathered my belongings that lay scattered around me, I discovered that the journey home was not as far as the stray.
   For I never left.
