For the first time in a month I finally received a new set of movies from Netflix. Yes it took me that long to return the old ones, which is 11 months faster than some people I know.
Children of the Corn 2009 version, Seventh Moon and Assignation of a High School President. I couldn’t spread the 3 films out over the three day weekend. Oh no, that would require restraint and self control- two things I spent on not dating, not smoking and not drinking. I am SPENT.
Now if I can separate the three films from each other… Children of the Corn is supposed to be exactly like the short story by Stephen King- the short story I never actually read. It takes place in 1975 and if you liked the relationship of the couple in the first version, the likable kids that wind up being adopted in the end… then this film isn’t for you. There is no ‘happy’ ending and the couples relationship… well after five minutes of listening to them bicker about EVERYTHING- I wanted to take a sickle one or both of them. The gore factor was high, there were some disturbing sex scenes and even more disturbing death scenes. I didn’t hate the film, but unlike the first version, I’ll probably never revisit it.
Seventh Moon was made by the co-creator of the Blair Witch Project (a film I absolutely hated… as much or even more than the movie Crash) Seventh Moon was surprisingly not horrible. A couple is honeymooning in China to visit the husbands family, some how they wind up detoured and abandoned in a small village during the Hungry Ghost Festival. Aside from an annoying moment or two “Brilliant… head in there with no weapons… nada…” I felt creeped out and actually scared a few times. Bravo prior sucky film maker… bravo.
Now for Assignation of a High School President. Save it for the younger generation. One who is a film seasoned as myself, figured it out almost immediately. Even with knowing how it ends, the dialog had me arching my brow at first and then I realized it was fitting with the character. Cliche after cliche, it worked. A high school reject is trying to make it as a journalist and uncovers the story that will put him on top. Missing S.A.T.’s and the schoold perfect president. Soon he finds out his story was told prematurely and inaccurately, and then he discovers even darker and deeper secrets that change the dynamics of the school FOREVER. Well, not quite FOREVER. Again, it is a dark comedy that tells a story most of us have heard before, but it’s still interesting to hear it again. If anything it was fun watching Bruce Willis play the Desert Storm vet who’s the gym coach that HATES gum.
Next week I’m hoping to see ‘Drag Me to Hell’ and ‘How to be a Serial Killer’.
Oh come on, it’s October, watching dark themed films is mandatory.
