It makes blogging a piece of cake. If you go to wordpress.com I'm sure they can explain what they are. I used to design my own website and painfully and slowly uploaded everything when I had to update it, struggling with the style sheets and coding as the browsers changed. WP enables you to be lazy... you don't have to think, they do so you can blog. I know there's a free service through it- but mine is done via my hosting company and domain.
