Jonathon squealed, “I’m so happy it’s not me this time! I’m sorry, I love you, I’m here for you… but YAY!”
Why is he so happy? EMG.
My medical appointment for the car accident was this morning and I once more was torn about my feelings. On the one hand I could sleep in and because of feeling stiff/sore from the range of motion he has me do, I decided to take the full day off of work. Yay no work!
Typically I go in and he has me turn my head, etc. says “Here’s a prescription for Flexeril, come back in a few weeks.” It leaves me frustrated because I haven’t stopped hurting, mainly an odd sensation in my hands/feet which feels like I fell flat on asphalt, plus my neck and the right side of my head are still sore. The accident was almost three months ago, shouldn’t this go away?
FINALLY he did the normal routine and I addressed my hands/feet again. He brought in some tools to run tests on sensation. Discovery (his- because I’ve known it all along)… I’ve little to no feeling my hands/feet. I feel pressure… but not sensation.
He wasn’t sure if it was due to the injury or not because he thought for the most part that I’m recovered (although I keep telling him I still hurt)… but to cover both bases he ordered x-rays and a TON of blood work. So much for the peaceful morning/and afternoon off work.
(I told Jonathon about them taking my blood and he got upset “They better give it back!” When he had his surgery they took his blood and because he needed a transfusion, he assumed they were just giving back what they took.)
I was called in after he looked at the X-rays he said I have cervical strain and neck arthritis. He wants me in physical therapy at a local clinic asap so I can begin treatment. Yes, this is something he should have done from the start… or at least after the second month when any and all swelling goes down. He looked a little surprised that the x-rays revealed that my neck was really and for truly jacked up. What, some people fake whiplash? He gave me a look like he could relate to the ouch and then asked if I wanted more drugs. I crinkled my nose and looked at the charts and x-rays and said. “Yeah.”
On a good/pouty note- my test results came back normal. According to my blood work I’m a very healthy woman (other than this whole neck/nerves thing) so he left a message and told me wants to do an Electromyogram (EMG). I looked it up and it really sucks!
Electromyogram: A test used to record the electrical activity of muscles. When muscles are active, they produce an electrical current that is usually proportional to the level of muscle activity. An electromyogram (EMG) is also called a myogram.
The EMG can detect abnormal muscle electrical activity in many diseases and conditions, including muscular dystrophy, inflammation of muscles, pinched nerves, peripheral nerve damage (damage to nerves in the arms and legs), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (also known as Lou Gehrig disease), myasthenia gravis, disc herniation, and others. The EMG helps to distinguish between muscle conditions in which the problem begins in the muscle and muscle weakness due to nerve disorders.
There are two types of EMG — the intramuscular EMG and the surface EMG. Intramuscular EMG (the most commonly used type) involves inserting a needle electrode through the skin into the muscle whose electrical activity is to be measured. Surface EMG (SEMG) involves placing the electrodes on (not into) the skin overlying the muscle to detect the electrical activity of the muscle. In both types of EMG, the electrical activity is displayed visually on an oscilloscope and may also be displayed audibly through a microphone.
The word “electromyography” looks dauntingly long but it is made up of three parts: “electro-” + “-myo-” + “-graphy.” (“-myo-” is from the Greek “mys”, meaning muscle and “graphy” comes from the Greek “grapho” meaning to write) . So electromyography literally is the writing (recording) of muscle electricity.
Does an EMG hurt?
Yes. There is some undeniable discomfort at the time the needle electrodes are inserted. They feel like shots (intramuscular injection), although nothing is injected during an EMG. Afterwards, the muscle may feel a little sore for up to a few days
I don’t really care for the more ouches part… or the needle part, I do like the getting better part though.
I’ve very glad it’s not Jonathon either and he has EVERY right to YAY and WOO HOO! He’s been through SO much… I would just rather be in no pain so I can take care of him! NEEDLES!! EEEK!

Luv ya, but I’m glad it’s not Jonathon too. Our guys have ENOUGH hospital time, it’s ok to take a turn once in awhile
Seriously, hope EMG gets you better, you look so sore
It better help you!! See you tomorrow. Good night!
Well it’s not a ‘sore’ look, it’s a pained look that disappears when I leave work
jk. Actually my new pained look on top of the “the doctor always jacks up my neck and I hurt for weeks after I leave” is from doing my morning break walk in heels. Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch.
Hey Sweet heart.
Michelle and I were in an autoaccedent a year ago (rear ended big time) Her doctor told her the swelling would go down and she would be fine. She went back to work, still in pain, still sore, still with little to no feeling in her hands/feet…And then three disks hurniated. The bottom line is that you should, indeed, goto Physical Theropy ASAP. And no, it will not nessacerally go away in a few months. Yours dosn’t sound NEARLY as bad as hers was, but it could bug you for a long time. I was uninjured in the accedent (Thank god) but I do sypathise with you as I have seen what it has done to my Michelle. Good luck and get to a PT!
Love ya,
~Michael
