Happy Festivus?

picture-396.jpgFor the rest of us.

I pretty much did the airing of grievances all day long, which is something I do all week long- regardless of the time of year. The Feats of Strength; well Jonathon whooped my butt, so the celebration is over with.

I mentioned I was baking sugar cookies yesterday. They didn’t turn out quite like planned. I sat there for probably fifteen minutes staring at them with the boy. We looked at each other, then back at the cookies, and then at each other again. I got up and rummaged through the kitchen looking for other ingredients to make a new batch. We had almost everything, except butter. Butter you need the butter in order to make cookies otherwise you have things worse than in the picture. Or perhaps you have what’s pictured in the picture. What is pictured in the picture tasted as bad as it looks.

My back up plan was in the form of a Betty Crocker cake mix I had forgotten about. I bought it for the heck of it not too long ago, but unfortunately when I wanted to bake it, I had no eggs. What’s a cake without eggs? It’s pretty much like the cookies without butter. You just don’t want to go there.

So the cake isn’t all that attractive, but neither is the word “Festivus”. It’s a Hershey’s Chocolate flavor with vanilla frosting, red sprinkles and crumbled Nestle’s Crunch sticks.

Next year I’m  going to plan our winter holiday a little better and come up with a better sounding name.

image1.jpgI went back and forth on my feelings of the holiday over the entire weekend. I guess in a way you can say that the fond memories ended with childhood and I don’t mind keeping them there. Today though, after many years of Jonathon shunning the holidays in favor of his own birthday- he decided that he wants to celebrate mainly due to the media. I dug out some winter holiday type decorations that basically came in happy meals over the years- pulled out his Yule stocking (I bought it a few years ago because it was The Hulk), stuffed it with candies and a little pull string launch plane. It’s not about family gathering as that seems to be a floating thing with my family.

The being kind to mankind thing annoys me- shouldn’t that be year round? Do families need a ton of materialist items that serves any purpose other than “Oooh look- a brand name”? If you want to help a family in need, nix the toys and give them a certificate for a years supply of food, gas, bill pay assist, or a computer.

I’ll keep the decorations, sharing of food (should there be people to share food with), traditional music (I don’t care to hear anything under 40 yrs old when it comes to holiday music), and possibly rent a ton of DVD’s as omg I’m so sick of Christmas themed television programming. I don’t worship Santa, I can’t stand Santa, and I don’t want to see another fat guy in a red suit for the rest of my life. Thankfully Jonathon feels the same way where that’s concerned. He’s basically about the family gathering and getting stuff for the heck of it. Well he’s a kid- he gets stuff for the heck of it year round. Perhaps every time I buy him something I’ll just wrap it up first.

I’m bitter yet sentimental. It’s an odd place to be. I guess it’s hard to celebrate something when you’ve really no one to celebrate it with, so it puts you in a very odd place. Jonathon wants the gimme portion and I just want a break from that.

I did watch a couple good films. I am Legend I give a B+, Resident Evil 3 did not disappoint… although Evan Almighty did. Tonight I’m going to view 30 Days of Night.

Currently though, I’m going to log off the computer and cut into the Festivus cake- or “insert cool sounding winter holiday name here”. I’m thinking of just saying “holiday”, that way I don’t feel weird for celebrating a holiday that has some attachment to a religion, but I can enjoy the traditions of the nation and childhood without feeling like a torn hypocrite who winds up over analyzing it all like I have been doing for far too long.
